Five Star Dive Bar Tour
If you like dive bars, then you’ll love our Five Star Dive Bar tour. Can there be a “five star” dive bar? Let us do the driving, and you can decide!
What makes a bar, a dive bar?
A dive bar is typically a small, unglamorous, old-style bar with inexpensive drinks, and it’s usually old…many, many years old. It features dim lighting, dated décor, neon beer signs, and saucy sayings on the walls. Small, grubby appearing, and poorly lit, the quintessential dive bar is one of the very few businesses not really trying to get your attention. Which, of course, is part of their charm.
Dive bars do not usually advertise or have fancy signage, and they might not even have a parking lot. An old-style dive bar may be cash only, and the owner or one of the family members is often behind the bar. Some are known for their comfort food, and others only have bagged snacks. Most fun of all, they usually have a clientele from all walks of life, including locals who’ve been drinking there for 20 years or more.
A dive bar is usually considered the lowest ladder on the rung, making “Best Dive Bar” a contradiction in terms. And they OWN it! Should the award for Best Dive Bar go to the worst dive bar – making the Worst Dive Bar the best? Book our tour today and you decide!
Some of Our Faves
Puppy’s Bar & Grill, Avon: A small town bar & grill that caters to almost everyone. The “19th hole”, where the next shot is in the glass!
Kelly’s Saloon, Geneseo: A “come as you are bar” that’s open 365 days a year. Irish-themed bar with graffiti-covered walls and friendly staff. Their slogan: “Serving the Scum of the Earth since 1978”.
Greenway Pub: the epitomy of a dive bar. Friendly locals, dim lighting, COLD beer at reasonable prices, and no pretentions.
Town Tavern, Dansville: a family-owned bar with a motorcycle theme
DiSalvo’s Par-keys, Scottsburg: Unassuming is an overstatement. Looking at the outside, with the plastic palm trees and old siding, you might not go inside…but you’d be missing great food and friendly folks. A good place to get some food in your belly!
The Lantern Lounge, Livonia: Unpretentious, “take us as we are” place with friendly staff and everything you’d expect from a true dive bar! As the bartender said, “Dirty floors, heavy pours” (although the floors and bathrooms really are clean)!
Ye Mendon Tavern, Mendon: Characterizes the origin of the term “dive bar”, because you have to “dive downstairs” to get in and hang with the friendly locals. Plus, it’s rumored to be haunted by the original owner!
